Wat Rong Khun, วัดร่องขุ่น ~ Thailand

is known as White Temple is situated  about thirteen kilometers south of Chiang Rai, very near to Myanmar. Different from other temple. It is covered with combination of whitewash and tiny mirror chips that make it shine.

It  was built by artist, Ajarn Chalermchai Kositpipat. He  together with more than 60 followers devoted totally their effort and energy to make this structure their life work created this temple with his freedom, not under anybody’s influence or thought processes, so he did not accept donating from any sources including government

The artist used white color to represent Buddha’s purity while the mirrors symbolize Buddha’s dhamma, teaching men to observe their own mind and reflect kindness towards others.

Before entering the temple grounds, morbid and spooky statues and hanging heads welcome the new visitor. Skeletons and Demons warn the visitor about the dangers of Alcohol and Smoking.

 

The whole architecture as well as the statues all around have been carefully studied and are imbued with riddles, teachings and Buddhist philosophy.

The Temple is surrounded by a pond with dozens of white and black fish guarded by dragons and fantastic mythological creatures.

Before crossing the bridge of the “Cycle of Rebirth”, we cannot prevent getting the chills gazing upon the hundreds of sculpted hands reaching up from “Hell”, symbolizing the way to happiness through overcoming cravings.

 

Twisted demon faces observe and mock the visitor as he prepares to purge his soul from cravings.

After crossing the Bridge, the visitor reaches the temple, the Abode of Buddha.

Although still unfinished, the paintings on the walls inside represent a mix of traditional Thai Buddhist art and contemporary scenes like a plane crashing into the twin towers, the war for Oil, many movie/comics characters like Neo, Batman, Doraemon, Kungfu Panda,  Superman and Star Wars droids. All superheroes painted to let people know that there really are no heroes in our world. so many morality declines , the world become ill , people lack moral standard. that is why Ajarn Chalermchai portray evil people as the demon with mouth opened encircled the entrance of the temple. When visitors walked out, they feel they leave the demon behind and going towards the highest level of dhamma, where people will not reborn, to meet the Lord Buddha at the edge of the universe.

Next to the white temple, on the other side of the pond, is also a the “Gharavasa” (the layman quarters) where an Art gallery, a preaching hall and a “golden toilet” are located, I think that is the most beautiful public restroom, and free to enter and admire, many people took photo of themselves in front of this toilet.

 

The temple-like building is supposed to represent the Body (as opposed to the white temple that represents the Mind). Charlemchai built the two bots (white and gold) in hope to teach people to let go and not cling to substance or money, and not to perceive the physical body as an assumed identity.

Ajarn Chalermchai builds this  temple is different from other temples that are golden. He believes that gold is suitable to people who lust for evil deeds. The Lord Buddha represent purity, and he use small mirrors throughout  the building is symbol of wisdom (Dharma) that shines throughout the universe.

“I want to build a heavenly garden (happiness) for humans to stroll in. I want all visitors of whatever religion to have feeling of peace, happiness and at the same time get to understand the meaning of Buddhism that can be seen all over the temple whether it’s in the architectural, the drawings , or the molding works” said Ajarn Chalermchai

Whether or not his message will reach visitors’ soul, Wat Rong Khun is scheduled to be completed by 2070 , remains one of the most unusual and interesting places of worship I have ever visited.

When it is completed, Wat Rong Khun will be a symbol to one man’s dedication to his country, his religion, and his present King, with a deep meaning behind every statue, corner or architectural design representing the wild creativity and vision. one day, it will also became a heritage of the world.

” I discipline the mind to train me toward being a good person with clear thinking, speaking well, and doing good deeds, We are all human, and I want to give goodness to people. If we have love and forgiveness in our hearts, it will come out naturally. You need to practice patience before you can control your own mind.” said Ajarn Chalermchai.

Happy Mother’s Day

Ucapan manis yang aku terima lewat bbm tepat jam 00.00 WIB, dari Michael, sebagai  ungkapan cinta yang tulus, dan aku mendapat Magnum dan coklat dari Sharen disertai  ucapan  “Happy Mother’s day, I love you Mom”

Mother’s day adalah hari istimewa untuk mama yang telah melahirkan, membesarkan dan mendidik kita. aku melihat kembali hubungan ku dengan mama. suatu hubungan yang tidak semanis hubunganku dengan anak-anakku.  sejak kecil aku merasa mamaku tidak mencintai aku sebesar cintanya kepada adik laki-laki ku, Aku selalu berusaha melakukan segala sesuatu yang terbaik dan aku ingin sekali mendengar dia mengatakan “mama sayang kamu’, tetapi kata itu tidak pernah aku dengar. semua berjalan biasa dan aku juga sampai hari ini tidak pernah mengatakan “Happy mother’s day” karena memang rasanya bukan kebiasaan kami untuk saling mengungkapkan perasaan.

Foto ini diambil ketika aku berulang tahun yang ke 1, mama yang cantik, mama yang sederhana, dengan segala ketulusan hati membesarkan dan mendidik aku. Tuntutan hidup mengharuskan mama untuk berjualan di Pasar, kami hidup sederhana, dengan segala suka dukanya, terutama untuk biaya sekolah, tapi semua dapat dilalui dengan baik.

Seringkali timbul pertengkaran antara aku dan mama, tentang siapa teman-teman dekatku, aku merasa, mama terlalu turut campur, dan mama merasa mama sudah berpengalaman jadi tahu lebih banyak. Hubungan kami menjadi tidak harmonis, aku memilih tidak banyak bercerita tentang apapun.

Bagi aku, mama bukan sosok ideal, bahkan amat tidak ideal. dalam hati aku berniat, kalau aku punya anak kelak. Aku akan menjalin hubungan yang baik dengan mereka, akan selalu ada pernyataan cinta, dan tidak ada rasa prasangka telah diperlakukan sebagai anak emas antara seorang dengan yang lain. Selalu menjadi sahabat bagi anak-anakku, singkatnya semua hal yang aku inginkan dari seorangn mama.   Aku akan menjadi mama yang baik bahkan yang terbaik yang dapat aku lakukan.

Waktu aku kuliah, mama masih berjualan makanan di Pasar, pagi hari aku mampir untuk mengantarkan sesuatu, aku mendengar percakapan seperti ini ” Bu, anak saya sih kuliah di Unpar, anak saya mah pinter.”

” Jurusan apa bu?” tanya pembeli, “Wah… saya sih kurang ngerti, pokoknya jurusannya susah deh.” Aku  terdiam, dan tidak bisa mengatakan apapun. Memang, mamaku tidak pernah tahu akan jurusan kuliah aku, atau kegiatan apapun yang aku lakukan, tapi ternyata diam-diam dia membanggakan aku.

Setelah menikah dan melahirkan Michael, dan aku harus bangun tiap 3 jam sekali untuk memberikannya ASI, dan itu amat melelahkan karena waktu tidurku banyak tersita, dan ketika suatu malam, aku memberinya ASI, aku memandangi Michael dan merasa betapa akupun mendapat perlakukan  yang sama ketika aku bayi.  Malam-malam sekitar pukul 1, aku menelpon mamaku,

Dengan kaget mama bertanya “ada apa?” aku menjawab “Tidak apa-apa Ma, hanya mau minta maaf dan berterima kasih karena sudah menjaga dan merawat saya.” Mama menjawab “Minta maaf kenapa? kamu baik sekali kok, dan menjaga serta merawat anak adalah kewajiban orang tua, sekarang sebagai balasannya kamu harus menjaga dan merawat anakmu.”

Sejak peristiwa itu hubungan kami menjadi lebih baik, aku mulai mengerti akan sikapnya selama ini, rasanya memang karakter kami berbeda, tapi aku mulai faham akan sikap dan pandangannya yang sebetulnya bijak dan baik, sederhana, dan menerima apa adanya, mama merasa dirinya tidak bisa bersekolah tinggi karena waktu kecil juga terhimpit kesulitan ekonomi, dan aku yang penuh ambisi untuk melakukan ini itu.Aku mulai mengerti apakah gunanya  pengungkapan cinta dengan  menuntut suatu pernyataan lisan yang sebetulnya tidak penting. Rasanya tidak adil, dan prasangka bahwa mama lebih mencintai adik laki-lakiku adalah pikiranku sendiri yang selama ini membelenggu pikiranku.

Setelah Sharen lahir dan mulai besar, aku sering merasa kesulitan menghadapinya, dengan sikap yang aku anggap keras kepala dan selalu membantah. Aku bercerita pada mama dengan berurai airmata. Mama hanya tersenyum dan mengatakan “Sharen persis dengan kamu, dan menurut mama yang tua yang mesti mengalah” Aku kaget dan sadar, jadi seperti ini posisinya ketika hubungan aku dan mama selalu ribut, Mama mengalah dan aku tetap pada kemauanku, merasa diri lebih pintar dan bisa melakukan banyak hal.

Aku sadar, mama tidak akan pernah membaca tulisan ini dan mama juga tidak akan pernah tahu secara lisan apa yang telah terjadi di antara kami, tetapi dengan menuliskan hal ini, aku lebih mengajari diriku sendiri untuk lebih ber”dischernment” (istilah yang digunakan oleh Romo pada kotbah pagi tadi), mencari kehendak Tuhan dalam diri saya, menjadi pribadi yang lebih baik dan lebih bijak.

Pada Mother’s day ini, aku berdoa untuk mamaku, semoga selalu bahagia dan sehat, Tuhan selalu melindungi dan menyayangi nya seperti mama menyanyangi aku.  Hari ini , untuk pertama kali dalam hidupku, anak-anak mengajari aku bagaimana caranya mencintai mama. Aku bersyukur telah dilahirkan, dididik dan dibesarkan, oleh seorang yang amat sederhana dalam bertindak, sederhana dalam berfikir.  Semoga masih banyak waktu kebersamaan kami, memperbaiki hubungan yang kurang baik, dan ada cukup waktu untuk membahagiakan mama.

Mungkin aku berusaha menjadi ibu yang baik, tetapi aku bukan anak yang baik, unutk  membalas semua jasa dan budi baikmu yang kini aku usahakan adalah mencintai anak-anakku dengan sederhana seperti teladanmu selama ini.

Teriring salam untuk semua Mama di dunia ini, Semoga berkat Tuhan selalu menyertai para Mama. Mama yang selalu mencintai dengan sederhana, seperti kata penyair Sapardi Djoko Damono :

Wisdom of the old bird

 

An old blackbird found a piece of bread and flew off with it.

When they saw this, the younger birds pursued him in order to attack.

Confronted by imminent battle, the blackbird dropped the piece of bread into the mouth of a snake, thinking to himself:

‘When you’re old, you see things differently. I lost a meal, it’s true, but I can always find another piece of bread tomorrow.
